Toji is well known for its five storied pagoda (designated as a national treasure), Japan's tallest with a height of 57 meters. It was rebuilt and dedicated by the third Tokugawa Shogun, Iemitsu in 1643.

It consists of Honmaru Palace (designated as important cultural properties) and princely Ninomaru Palace(designated as a national treasure). The current structure of Honmaru Palace was known as the Katsura Palace before relocated to the present site and renamed. The architecture and shohekiga, paintings on room partitions, in Ninomaru Palace impress visitors with the luxury and the grandeur.

It is overwhelming to see one thousand statues of the Armed Kannon stand on both the right and left sides of the main statue in 10 rows, each as tall as a human being. It is called "Wood of Buddhist statues".

There are Nio-Mon, Nishi-Mon and Sanju-no-to (which are designated as important cultural properties) with Mt.Otowa of Higashiyama in the background. From the platform, you can enjoy the fine view of western Kyoto city and the colorful contrasts of all four seasons.

In a garden of GINKAKU (designated as a national treasure), white gravel is raked into a large horizontal expanse known as the Sea of Silver Sand (Ginshadan) next to a distinctive cone-shaped mound called the Moon-Viewing Platform (Kogetsudai). It is known that Ginshadan and Kogetsudai reflect the light of the moon and light up the GINKAKU.

Reflecting in the Kyokochi Pond, the second and third stories of lavish structure are coated with lacquer (urushi) over which has been applied countless squares of genuine gold leaf. The Golden Pavilion is an outstanding example of Muromachi-period architecture. KINKAKUJI precincts are devoted to gardens, considered to be a historical landmark in their own right.
